can you feel it do you smell that The 2022 PGA Championship is here, and for the first time in 15 years, four days of pristine golf are returning to Southern Hills for a major championship. It all begins Thursday with Round 1, when the Tulsa, Oklahoma lot will be packed with fans. (Whether they’ll be drinking those $18 beers remains to be seen.)

The anticipation is high as the game begins as Tiger Woods is playing only his second golf tournament in 15 months and first since the Masters. With defending champion Phil Mickelson absent from his self-imposed exile, Woods will be the ‘old hat’ that fans will follow for at least 36, hopefully 72 holes.

There is so much to follow beyond Woods, however, and it looks like one of his playing partners for the first 36 holes, Rory McIlroy, will be the talk of the town early on in Southern Hills. McIlroy took the lead in the clubhouse on Round 1 as he made an unusually quick start to a major championship. His pairing with Woods and Jordan Spieth has been a must-see on TV, but they’re hardly the key group on the course.

There’s a hard-hitting trio of Brooks Koepka, Shane Lowry and Adam Scott, as well as another featuring the world’s top three golfers Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa. McIlroy is aiming for his first major since 2014, while Spieth hopes to finish the career grand slam and Scheffler wants to compete in the first two major championships of the season back-to-back.

CBS Sports will be providing live coverage of the 2022 PGA Championship from start to finish on Thursday, so be sure to catch Round 1 live with us.
