The Agnipath program was recently launched by the government to bring about a change in the armed forces recruitment process. The program allows for the recruitment of Army, Navy and Air Force soldiers largely on a short-term, four-year contract basis.

As part of the program, young people between the ages of 17.5 and 23 are accepted into the three services. The new recruit will be called “Agniveers”. Upon completion of the four-year term, 25% of regular service recruits will be retained based on organizational requirements and policies promulgated by the Armed Forces from time to time.

The monthly salary of an Agniveer in the first year of employment would be 30,000 and the amount would be in hand 21,000 as 9,000 would go to a corpus with an equal contribution from the government.

Then the monthly salary is calculated in the second, third and fourth year 33,000, 36,500 and 40,000.

Each Agniveer receives a set of 11.71 lakh as “Seva Nidhi Package” and it is exempt from income tax.
