Big Ten announces volleyball schedule for 2022

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Big Ten Conference has announced the fall 2022 volleyball schedule, which includes a 20-game schedule, including 10 home and 10 away games. Michigan State will play 10 games against teams that finished the 2021 season and are ranked in the top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Michigan State plays home and away series against Nebraska, Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Northwestern. The Spartans are set for singles games against Maryland, Penn State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Ohio State and Iowa.

“The Big Ten is the premier volleyball conference in the country and this season will be no exception,” said the Michigan State head coach Leah Johnson. “Our team is challenged day and night. There are no easy opponents in this league. Our program features 10 newcomers who will experience running the gauntlet of the Big Ten for the first time. We will focus on our process and development as we strive to climb the ranks of the prestigious Big Ten.”

Michigan State begins its Big Ten campaign with four straight road games, opening conference play in Nebraska on Friday, September 23 before traveling to Rutgers on Sunday, September 25. MSU concludes its four-game road stretch with games against Maryland on Friday, September 30, and Penn State on Sunday, October 2.

Continuing the trend of Friday/Sunday games, the Spartans welcome Nebraska to East Lansing on Friday, October 7 for their first home conference game of the season before playing the weekend at home to Minnesota on Sunday, October 9 break up. host Michigan State rival Michigan on Friday, October 14 before hitting the road again on Sunday, October 16 for a game in Indiana.

MSU travels to defending champion Wisconsin on Friday, October 21 before returning home to face Indiana on Sunday, October 23. Michigan State will play its first game of the week on the conference roster on Wednesday, October 26 in Minnesota. Finish October with a game in Michigan on Sunday, October 30.

The Spartans open November with back-to-back games, welcoming Purdue and Ohio State to East Lansing on Friday, November 4th and Saturday, November 5th. Michigan State will play a second series of back-to-back games this coming weekend, Illinois will be played on Friday November 11th and Northwestern will be played on Saturday November 12th. MSU’s final road series of the regular season includes games against Illinois on Friday, November 18 and Northwestern on Sunday, November 20.

Michigan State concludes the home game of the Big Ten and meets Rutgers in a midweek game on Wednesday, November 23 before the regular-season finals against Iowa on Saturday, November 26.

MSU announced its non-conference schedule on May 27, highlighted by games against two NCAA tournament teams, two teams selected to play in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship, and one conference champion. The Spartans will play two home tournaments, open the season with the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational on August 26th and 27th and conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule with the Green & White Classic on September 16th and 17th.
