Winning and losing is the name of the game in college football. Any football, really, or any sport. And a home win is the first step to establishing dominance.
However, home field advantage is not equal. Selected stadiums are among the noisiest, most disruptive and intense in the world.
Which Power Five teams have done best at home lately?
Ole Fraulein – 9
Wachwald – 9
Oklahoma – 9th
Ole Miss’s winning streak is impressive considering the high school games in the SEC West, by far the most competitive league in college football. Earlier this season, the Rebels were set to add three more home Ws to the record before hosting Kentucky on Oct. 1.
Wake should notch two more to start this fall before Clemson comes to Truist Field on Oct. 24 for the Deacon conference opener.
Oklahoma has technically won its last 10 games at Memorial Stadium, but the Sooners’ 2021 opener against Tulane was a road game on the books as teams were unable to play in New Orleans due to Hurricane Ida.
Table of Contents
UTSA
Home winning streak: 10 games
Seven of those 10 games came last season when the Roadrunners finished 12-2, including the Conference USA team’s title-winning team against Western Kentucky.
UTSA has lost just once at home in two seasons under current coach Jeff Traylor, in 2020 to the US Military Academy. But that streak is under threat: Watch out for UTSA’s opener against Houston, a suspected top-25 team coming to the Alamodome on week 1.
NC state
Home winning streak: 10 games
Just four combined points stopped the Wolfpack from a perfect record in ACC games a year ago, with the team’s home roster of impressive wins.
The first, a September preseason win in overtime against then-No. 9 Clemson ranked in a rough atmosphere. And the second, a home final against rivals North Carolina in which the pack scored two touchdowns in under 30 seconds, one of the loudest and most intense scenes ever of the 2021 college football season.
NC State’s home roster looks winnable this year, but with dates against Big 12 Up and Comer Texas Tech early and Wake Forest to start in November.
Georgia
Home winning streak: 12 games
Georgia fans remember the Bulldogs’ last home loss well: on November 12, 2019, when Rodrigo Blankenship’s field goal against South Carolina sailed wide to the left.
Since then, Georgia has won a dozen in a row at Sanford Stadium, including six a year ago when the Dawgs won the college football playoff national championship.
Looking ahead to 2022, Georgia should be the overwhelming favorite in every home game, with Auburn and Tennessee being the only games to really watch out for. Samford, Kent State, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech are all easy wins.
Alabama
Home winning streak: 13 games
There are few safer bets in college football than Alabama beating a team at home, ranked or not. The last time the Crimson Tide left home as losers was November 9, 2019 against an opponent who could not be stopped.
Joe Burrow and LSU used that game to improve on their unbeaten record en route to countless broken records, a Heisman Trophy and the national championship in a tight 46-41 duel.
Going forward, all eyes will be on Tide at home on October 8 against Texas A&M, fresh out of his historic recruiting streak, an off-season feud between those coaches and with the Aggies eyeing a college football playoff bid.
Miami (OH)
Home winning streak: 14 games
The Cradle of Coaches has built a very solid home presence at Yager Stadium over the past several years under head coach Chuck Martin.
Miami went 7-6 a year ago, five of those wins coming at home. The last time the Redhawks lost at home was on September 29, 2018 to Western Michigan by a single point.
Oregon
Home winning streak: 19 games
Autzen Stadium in Eugene is routinely one of the noisiest venues in college football and has been instrumental in keeping the Ducks’ winners there in recent seasons.
Oregon last lost a home game on September 22, 2018, a seven-point loss in overtime to 7th-ranked Stanford when they were ranked 20th in the AP poll.
Oregon can take it to 20th with a home win over Eastern Washington in Week 2, but that streak will be tested when BYU comes to Autzen Saturday after.
cincinnati
Home winning streak: 27 games
It’s been a long time since the Bearcats lost one at Nippert Stadium, back in Luke Fickell’s first season on the touchline, an 11-point loss to Temple in 2017.
Cincinnati loses some key playmakers that earned it a historic place in the college football playoffs a year ago, but Fickell still has enough talent on this roster to keep the series alive: Indiana looks to be UC’s toughest home game in to be this season.
Clemson
Home winning streak: 34 games
One of the first two Dynasty teams of the College Football Playoff era, Clemson built a solid reputation during that time by dominating teams in and out of the Death Valley conference.
Clemson has not lost a game at home since November 12, 2016, and by the narrowest margin a one-point thriller against Pitt as the No. 3 team in the top-25 polls.
This dropped the Tigers to 5th in the rankings, but they rebounded to win the ACC title, make the playoffs, defeat Ohio State in the semifinals and seal Alabama for the national championship with Hunter Renfroe’s famous TD catch at 1 win defeat second on the clock.
