Contemporary Theater Company presents the Ocean State Improvisation Festival

You walk into a theater and have no idea what might happen… and neither do the performers on stage! The Contemporary Theater Company is making that excitement its own with the 4th Annual Ocean State Improv Festival, June 8-11.

“We have a lot of troops planned for 2020 at the festival this year,” says General Manager Maggie Cady. “The performers come from seven states and we couldn’t be more excited!”

The festival’s impromptu performances range from musicals to Shakespeare, and everything is invented on the spot. This makes the festival full of unique experiences – nobody has ever seen these shows before and nobody can ever see them again.

“The Ocean State Improv Festival is a wild week where creativity and fun erupt in every interaction, so the performances you see are truly electrifying,” says Cady.

The festival kicks off with the theatre’s pandemic hit, the Patio Musical, which runs on Wednesdays at 7pm from June 1st to July 13th. This will be followed at 9pm by a jam session for all interested improvisers in town for the festival. There are performances from Thursday 9 June to Saturday 11 June at 5:30pm, 7pm and 9:30pm with an additional performance at 11pm on Friday nights.

Audiences may recognize the frequently performed CTC shows Micetro, Theatersports and Pirate Improv on the festival schedule, which will all feature performers from across the festival.

In addition to shows, the festival features workshops by teachers from across the country.

“Participating in workshops is a great way to connect with other artists and get a taste of different styles of improv,” says Cady. “We’ve brought back some of our favorite teachers from last year’s Ocean State Black and Funny Festival — John Gebretatose, who will be performing with Denzel Belin in Brotha, Brotha, and Stephanie Rae, President of the Black Improv Alliance — along with new faces and old favorites.”

Festival passes entitle you to tickets to performances, discounts at local businesses in the Wakefield area, and an Ocean State Improv Festival t-shirt. Audiences can purchase festival passes or tickets for individual performances and register for workshops on the theater’s website.

Make your way to Wakefield and enjoy the entertainment and the start of summer!

men on boats

By Jaclyn Backhaus

12-13 August 19-20, 26-27 September 1-3 Sep 8-10 at 7 p.m

Ten explorers. Four boats. A Grand Canyon. The compelling true (similar) story of an 1869 expedition on a mission to map the Colorado River. Can the captain lead this group of men who see themselves as explorers? How far does loyalty go when push comes to shove? Both funny and thought-provoking, Men on Boats turns history on its head.

Tickets: $30 (Choose your price between $10 and $40)
