MILWAUKEE- The Marquette University men’s and women’s cross-country skiing teams announced their 2022 schedule Wednesday afternoon. MU kicks off the season on Friday, September 2nd in Eastern Illinois. The 2022 season also brings the return of the Alumni Reunion Run on Saturday, September 24th.
“I am pleased to announce the 2022 Cross Country schedule, which includes the return of our traditional alumni reunion run,” said the head coach Sean Birren. “Our Harriers will have a challenging opening game to set the stage for a tough and memorable season.”
After the season opener at EIU, the Golden Eagles return home on September 9 for an in-state meeting at UW-Green Bay.
MU will then travel to Notre Dame for the next two meetings. The first is the National Catholic Invite (September 16) where the Marquette women will compete in a 5K race and the men will run a distance of five miles. They will return to South Bend for the Joe Piane Invite on September 30, where the men will run 8K and the women will run 6K.
Marquette will be attending back-to-back meetings on October 1st and 8th at UW-Parkside. At both meetings, the men run 8 km and the women run 6 km. The regular season ends on October 14 with the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria, Illinois.
“All of these gatherings, hosting many national qualifier teams, will prepare our men and women week after week for the highlight of the season at Oklahoma State’s BIG EAST, Great Lakes Regional and Nationals in November.”
The Marquette men and women begin their post-season run at the BIG EAST Championships on October 29th in Attleboro, MA. The Golden Eagles will then battle it out on November 10th at the Great Lakes Regional in Terre Haute, Indiana for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships (November 19th) in Stillwater, Okla.
The MU women will see 10 returnees this season. Kate JochimsTop finisher at last season’s Regional Qualifiers, leading the MU women along with Emily Nobody, Laurel Moneysmith, Mallory Lafever and Anna Penzkover. Experienced runners Lexi Kepler, Marissa Valentini, Gretchen Pfeiffer, Audrey Grimm and Gianna Konen also return for the women. The transfer of graduates joins the women this year Michaela Sullivan from Wisconsin Lutheran and freshman Carol Ludington from Indianapolis, Ind.
For men, 10 Golden Eagles from the 2021 season are back to compete in blue and gold. Dan Weizeorick returns for MU after being the top men’s finisher at last fall’s BIG EAST Championships and Regional Qualifiers. He is joined by veterans David Zeller, Zak Kindle, Jadon Conroy, Thomas Leonard, Cade Ferron and Greg Van Hollen. Austin Burke, Nathan Hirsch and Tyler Re return to MU with one year of experience. The men are joined by four newcomers: Grant Brawley, Ali Faiz, Sean Kellogg and Ronald Walters.
