Fantasy Football Debate: Derek Carr or Kirk Cousins (2022)

There is always debate in fantasy football. This is often what makes discussions about preparing fantasy football drafts so fun (or frustrating)! That’s certainly the case this year with so many players changing teams. Two players who have been Rand QB1s for multiple seasons are Derek Carr and Kirk Cousins. Both Carr and Cousins will often attempt to move up to the QB1 class in 2022. Which side are you on? Let’s take a look at the fantasy football debate between Kirk Cousins and Derek Carr.

Debate between Kirk Cousins and Derek Carr

Derek Carr 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

The biggest winner after trading Davante Adams is Derek Carr. He now has the luxury of having a surplus of offensive weapons, including arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL in his old college teammate.

Let’s not forget that when Carr had everyone available last season, the Raiders quarterback ranked second in the NFL in passing yards and 15th in fantasy points per game. However, his ceiling was limited due to his lack of mobility and weapons; Carr never finished better than a top-eight quarterback in 2021.

But Adams envisions equipping Carr with a peerless Red Zone weapon that will unleash his fantasy blanket. He’s exactly the positive touchdown regression that should get Carr’s fantasy numbers rolling. Carr’s 3.7 TD rate in 2021 was below his career average (4.3). And his 23 total passing touchdowns were seven short of expectations.

Fully expect Carr to throw for 30+ laser dots with Adams at his disposal. Every quarterback who threw at least 30 touchdowns last season finished in the top 10 in 2021.

Kirk Cousins Fantasy Football Outlook 2022

Kirk Cousins is the ugly duckling fantasy quarterback who has made his way into the top 12 producers (QB11, QB12) in consecutive seasons. Cousins did that last season, directing a surprisingly quick and more pass-heavy Viking offense. Last year, Minnesota was eighth and 12th in neutral pace and pass rate. With Kevin O’Connell at the helm this season, the passing rate could continue to be healthy (LAR, 7th), but the neutral pace could slip (LAR, 16th). If that happens and Adam Thielen takes a step back into his 32-year season, Cousins will be rendered as middle QB2.
