Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is expected to release four DLC bundles through its expansion pass and will follow a set schedule. We tell you what this schedule looks like.
Nintendo has stepped up its efforts when it comes to paid and free DLC for first-party titles. That shows Xenoblade Chronicles 3 with the expansion pass. The Expansion Pass includes four DLC bundles designed to keep players coming back to the game for more than a year. But how will players know when the next wave of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass DLC will be released when that release schedule is stretched far into the future?
The good news is that Nintendo has already given players a rough idea of when each bundle will be released and what will be included in each Xenoblade Chronicles 3 DLC bundle.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass DLC Schedule for Waves 2, 3, 4
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will have three DLC waves. The first part was available on day one, with early adopters able to get a sprinkling of additional content right away. Anything past that’s currently due out in four to 17 months.
While no exact release dates have been set for each wave of DLC just yet, there are estimates from Nintendo that each wave will be released before a specific date. The exact dates are expected to get closer with each release.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass Wave 1 (July 29, 2022)
- item bundle
- New colors for character outfits
The first wave was available at the launch of Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, it was the smallest and lightest of the DLC waves in terms of what it had to offer. This includes just a bundle of items, including Nopon Coins and a recolored outfit for each of the six main characters.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass Wave 2 (until December 31, 2022)
- Challenge battle mode with difficult enemy battles
- New hero with related quest lines
- New character outfits
For wave two, things will grow in a big way. The second wave of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 DLC will add the challenge battle mode, a new hero and indeed new outfits for characters.
Challenge Battle mode is essentially a boss rush mode that allows players to test their skills and character against challenging enemies. The mode was available in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and chances are it will look largely the same here.
Alongside this, there is a new hero with quest lines surrounding him. It’s unknown who the character might be or what the player’s quests might be, but it’s an exciting thought to have new content for the game with meaningful rewards this far past the original release date.
Finally, while the first wave added palette-swapped outfits for playable characters, wave two will actually add brand new outfits. Nintendo hasn’t yet confirmed what these outfits will look like or who will get the new outfits.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass Wave 3 (until April 30, 2023)
- Challenge battle mode with new difficult enemy battles
- Another new hero with quest lines
- More new character outfits
The third wave of Xenoblade Chronicles DLC will be a repeat of the second wave. And that’s probably not a bad thing.
The challenge battle mode will be expanded, another new hero will be added, and another set of character outfits will arrive. Again, the exact details of who’s coming and who’s getting new looks are uncertain, but there’s plenty to get excited about here.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass Wave 4 (until December 31, 2023)
- New original story scenario
The final wave of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 DLC will add new story content to the game. What kind of story content remains unknown.
Without spoiling anything, there’s enough room for either an epilogue chapter or an expansion of the events from the flashbacks that players see throughout the game. Hypothetically, there could also be a focus on tying the events of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 more closely to previous games in the series.
The expected release date in December 2023 can be a placeholder. It’s estimated that there will be four months between each of the first three DLC waves, so it’s definitely odd that there’s eight months between the third and fourth DLC packs. On the other hand, it’s possible that Nintendo is simply pulling out all the stops to make every last bit of content for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 extra special.
How much does the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass cost?
Players can purchase the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass for $29.99.
While digital copies of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 are available from a number of major online retailers, the DLC is not. The Expansion Pass is almost exclusively available in the Nintendo eShop. There are some options from some sites of questionable legitimacy that sell them at a premium, but as of this writing the only safe option for players looking to get the DLC is to buy it directly from Nintendo.
