Highland Film Group, BuzzFeed Studios Ink Film Deal – The Hollywood Reporter

Highland Film Group (HFG) has entered into a partnership agreement with BuzzFeed Studios to develop, produce, acquire and distribute three to five feature films per year ranging in value from $5 million to $12 million.

Under the terms of the agreement, BuzzFeed Studios will direct film production and creative in-house development properties derived from its IP, brand and audience data. All films are released in the US by HFG’s distribution arm, The Avenue, while BuzzFeed Studios creates marketing campaigns across its digital network. Highland Film Group will own foreign distribution rights for select titles, and BuzzFeed will rely on its international editions to promote those titles locally.

The deal was negotiated by Arianne Fraser, CEO of Highland Film Group, JJ Caruth, President of Domestic Marketing and Distribution for The Avenue, and Richard Alan Reid, studio head at BuzzFeed Inc.

The first production under the new partnership is the rom-com Manvilledirected by Lea Thompson, best known as Lorraine Baines-McFly in The Back to the Future movies. Her directorial credits include The year of the spectacular menCBS’ Star Trek: PicardAmblin Television Resident Foreigner and ABC’s The Goldbergs. The feature was written by Delaney Buffett and Katie Corwin and produced by Richard Alan Reid, Kia Jam and Dean Altit.

Manville tells the story of Alice, a selective woman who swipes left on her millionth potential match and receives an invitation to Manville: a matchmaking retreat guaranteed to end in marriage. But when she arrives, Alice finds that nothing is really what it seems. The film is slated to begin shooting in the fall.

Also included in the partnership is romance A true lovescheduled for release in the first quarter of 2023 and starring Simu Liu (Shang Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings), Phillipa Soo (Hamilton) and Luke Bracey (Baz Luhrmans elvis). The film is an adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel of the same name, directed by Andy Fickman (playing with fire, The game plan). The film is being produced by Volition Media’s Adam Beasley and Michael Jefferson (supercell, Sam & Kate), Willie Kutner (sunset, rebel Freeway), Fickman (You Once again), Betsy Sullenger (That Boy Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse), Sarah Finn (WandaVision), Fraser from Highland Film Group and Petr Jákl from RU Robot.

However, when Emma suddenly learns that Jesse is alive, she is unexpectedly forced to choose between the man she long thought dead and the fiancé who brought her back to life.
