The Yankees still lead the AL East by a respectable 10-game lead, but they’ve been sailing rough since the All-Star Break. New York has dropped its last three straight series, including a three-game sweep by the Cardinals, and they lose to the Mariners 4-3.

The silver lining? Aaron Judge hit his 45th home run of the year despite other problems on the team.

The Yankees will be looking for a repeat of their last series against the Red Sox earlier this season when they produced huge, mind-blowing results of 13-2 and 14-1 while hosting Boston at Yankee Stadium.

Story from The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) — New York Yankees spark plug Matt Carpenter said Wednesday he expects to return this season and will not need surgery on his broken left foot.

Carpenter saw a specialist in Seattle Wednesday morning ahead of the Yankees vs. Mariners series finale. Carpenter fouled a pitch off his left foot in the series opener Monday and is expected to be out for at least six weeks.

“I’m very encouraged, very encouraged that we avoided surgery and got a clean fracture that just needs to heal and we’ll see how long it takes,” Carpenter said.

Carpenter said he still expects to see another specialist in New York, but most opinions have been universal as treatment progresses.

The AL East leaders play their last regular season game in eight weeks on October 5.

Carpenter was injured when he fouled a slider off starter Logan Gilbert’s foot in the first inning Monday night. The left-hander was briefly checked by manager Aaron Boone but finished the shot and swung out in the next court.

“I’ll do whatever I can to expedite the process and we’ll see how it goes,” Carpenter said. “I don’t like to put myself under any restrictions or schedule, but if I feel like I can come back, I’ll be ready to go.”

The three-time All-Star has been one of baseball’s feel-good stories this year while making a comeback season at the age of 36. Carpenter was slaving away at Triple-A when the Texas Rangers released him in May. He signed with the Yankees and became a big surprise by regularly playing in a strong lineup.

Carpenter was a proven hitter, infielder, and outfielder for the Yankees.

Carpenter hits .305 with 15 homers and 37 RBIs in just 128 at-bats. He batted under-.200 in each of the previous two seasons with St. Louis.
