The odds appear to be in the upcoming prequel film to the blockbuster Hunger Games. A series of recent announcements about the upcoming film are getting fans excited for the latest story from the world of Hunger.
Suzanne Collins’ The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, released in May 2020, was confirmed for a screen adaptation even before the novel hit shelves. The film will hit theaters on November 17, 2023, according to an announcement by Lionsgate in late April at CinemaCon, a gathering of cinema owners.
The news came as Lionsgate unveiled a small teaser trailer of the new film, which simply showed a wintry scene with melting ice to reveal a bird and snake.
“You’re invited to return to the games,” read the caption, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “In 2023, the world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake.”
The announcement was also made via social media via the production’s official Twitter account @BalladOfPanem.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes takes place 64 years before the start of the original Hunger Games trilogy, in which readers meet Katniss Everdeen, a teenage heroine fighting to free Panem from its evil leader, President Snow.
“With this book I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are and what we believe is necessary for our survival. The rebuilding period ten years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Days – as the land of Panem struggles to regain its feet – provides the characters with fertile ground to grapple with these questions and thereby define their views on humanity ‘ Collins said in a 2019 statement before the book was published.
The central character of this story is 18-year-old Snow, long before he comes to power as President of Panem. The studio released a logline for the film The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes to the media. The Hollywood Reporter shared it in its entirety.
“Years before he became the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol,” the logline summarized. “With the 10th Annual Hunger Games fast approaching, young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the tribute girl from impoverished District 12. But after Lucy Gray has garnered Panem’s full attention by her singing defiantly during the harvest ceremony, Snow thinks he may turn the odds in her favor. Combining their instinct for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird and who is a snake.”
The film’s producer, Nina Jacobson, said fans will see some unexpected nuances from the original trilogy’s villain.
“Tom’s performance will both fulfill and disrupt everything you think you know about Coriolanus Snow,” she told Variety. “He’s a tremendous talent that will show why Snow always comes out on top.”
production for the upcoming film, what will film in places like Poland and Germany, starts this July.
