Antonio Gibson could see less goal-line work in 2022

The Athletic’s Ben Standig says the Washington Commanders, who are running back Antonio Gibson, will see less work in 2022 than in previous seasons, including around the goal line. From a fantasy perspective, Standig believes that Gibson will have lower ADP and consumption but higher efficiency in the upcoming season. (Source: The Athletic)

Fantasy Impact: Head coach Ron Rivera explained that the 2022 Commanders backfield will operate “by committee” because “you just can’t have a primary defender.” Washington drafted Alabama’s Brian Robinson in the third round, and also JD McKissic, who catches the pass, re-signed with the team. The presence of these players should ease some of the stress on Gibson, who missed just three games in his first two seasons but continues to be held back by injuries. The thought is that when additional running backs are involved, Gibson doesn’t have to be a workhorse but can still provide tremendous value on offense while staying healthy. Fantasy managers should consider him a mid-low level RB2 for the upcoming season. McKissic has FLEX appeal in PPR leagues, while Robinson is an exciting sleeper in Dynasty or deeper formats.

Antonio Gibson 2022 fantasy football prospect

Antonio Gibson has been a solid option as RB16 and RB17 in fantasy points per game for the last two seasons. He also ranked 10th in yards per route run, fifth in dodged tackles, and 14th in juke rate. He finished seventh on carries inside the five-yard line and eighth on weighted opportunities. We already know the use of passing games is limited with the retirement of JD McKissic, but now the goal line could be in jeopardy with Brian Robinson on the depth chart. The team have been talking about lightening Gibson’s load so the threat of Robinson is real, especially if Gibson continues to put the ball on the turf. As of 2020, he ties with Ezekiel Elliott for most fumbles (six) in the NFL among running backs.
