Kevin Smith is a busy guy. Not only has he directed many films over the past few decades, but he also has several podcasts, owns a comic book store, has started a successful pop-up restaurant, and much more. This week the director announced that he is now buying the cinema from his childhood. The actor took to Instagram to announce his purchase of the New Jersey theater and announced that he is directing a new movie that will be filmed at the location.
“As a cinema-centric kid, I always dreamed of living in a cinema one day! But the older I got the more I realized that childhood dreams don’t really come true – so I have to settle for life ABOUT @theatlanticmoviehouse, the cinema, the @jenschwalbach and me with Ashley from @leeloomultiprops, @odblues7 and @ buy jeffswanton5! My l’il baby @smodcastle is growing up to be the @smodcastlecinemas – the place to see live movies, shows, comedy, music and more! @kupamy has the full story on @thestarledger today, but the long and short of it is that I will be co-owner of the cinema I would go to with my dad and where I spent the many frivolous Friday nights of my youth in Jersey ! The new @clerksmovie will be permanent there and you can bet there will be monthly film series featuring my cult classics and midnight movies as @tuskthemovie and the new @scrtnetwork releases #killroywashere! But alongside my films, you can watch the upcoming me Join rry Marvel Movie Society and watch every new release from @marvelstudios with me and rave about them afterwards! Or join Mooby at the cinema on Saturday mornings and enjoy cereal with our @moobyspopup mascot while watching kids movies!”
Smith added, “Does it all mean that my films have gone so bad that I had to buy my own theater just to show them? Maybe. But that dramatic development has already paid off creatively: remember the script I just finished? I started writing because we’re going to have a theater soon – so I thought to myself, ‘Why don’t you make a movie IN your new theater?’ The film takes place in 1986 and is titled THE 4:30 MOVIE. It follows three suburban teenagers who hop to the theater on a spring Sunday and slink from movie to movie like we did as kids. I plan to shoot the film later in 2023 #theconveniencetour is over. And then next summer we enter the world of higher education. I have always felt that a cinema is best used as an educational facility during the day. There is a screen at the front and chairs for students – just like in a classroom. So get ready for View Askewniversity: A @jayandsilentbob Film School! I may be 52, but in this theater? I’m like a kid again.”
More than 15 years have passed since Smith’s Employees II hit theaters and the long-awaited threesome is finally on the way. Last weekend, the director shared the first five minutes Employees III at San Diego Comic-Con. The film will see the return of Brian O’Halloran (Dante Hicks), Jeff Anderson (Randal Graves), Rosario Dawson (Becky), Trevor Fehrman (Elias), Jason Mewes (Jay) and Smith (Silent Bob). The trailer featured some exciting cameo appearances, including a look at longtime Smith collaborator Ben Affleck.
Employees III is coming to select cinemas on September 13th and 15th. Tickets for the Convience Tour are available here.
