EDWARDSVILLE, Illinois — With eight regular-season home games and the return of the Bronze Boot game to Edwardsville, the 2022 SIUE men’s soccer schedule was announced Thursday.
“I’m looking forward to the many different challenges that the opponents will pose,” says SIUE Head Coach Cal Aquarius said. “After a tough 2021, this group is looking to bounce back this fall. Overall I think the schedule will offer a great balance between opponents, playing styles and some great home games here at Korte Stadium.”
The Cougars open the home game schedule with a preseason game against Illinois-Springfield (Aug. 20). The game is part of the annual SIUE Experience, orientation weekend for freshmen.
The regular season begins on the West Coast with games at Loyola Marymount (Aug. 25) and CSUN (Aug. 28).
SIUE will also play a non-conference game in Western Illinois (September 9th).
“We’re excited about the non-conference list, including an early trip to the West Coast, which will not only be great competition, but also an opportunity for us to travel and bond as a group early in the fall,” said Wassermann. “After this trip we will face some strong regional opponents who will bring a variety of different looks, which will be great preparation for the conference schedule.”
The return of the Bronze Boot game to Edwardsville underscores the non-conference schedule at Korte Stadium (September 13). The Cougars will host the Billikens for the first time since 2019. Since the series returned in 2018, all three games have gone to double overtime.
“It will be exciting to bring home the Bronze Shoe match here in Edwardsville,” said Wassermann. “I expect another tough group in Saint Louis. It’s a special historical rivalry for college football, both programs and the communities of St. Louis and Metro East. It should be fun here and I know our group will be ready for it.”
SIUE will also host Lindenwood (September 2), Southern Indiana (September 5), and Memphis (September 27) in non-conference games.
The Missouri Valley Conference season, SIUE’s second season since returning to the league, begins in Evansville (September 17). The Cougars also travel to games in Drake (Oct. 1), Missouri State (Oct. 19) and Bradley (Oct. 29).
SIUE will induct new MVC members Belmont (Sept. 24) and UIC (Oct. 9), as well as Evansville (Oct. 15) and Missouri State (Nov. 2).
“MVC is a tough league and with the new schedule we will have eight MVC games and some new opponents including Belmont and UIC,” Wassermann added. “I have experience coaching against both programs which I know will complement the league very well along with the already strong group of MVC opponents we face.”
