Pilots Announce 2022-23 Men’s Basketball Non-Conference Schedule

PORTLAND, Oregon — The University of Portland men’s basketball program has announced its non-conference schedule for the 2022-23 season. The loaded roster includes an invite to the 2022 Phil Knight Invitational (PKI), a Pac-12 matchup against the Oregon Ducks, and home games against regional rivals Portland State and Seattle U.

A limited-time off-conference flex ticket package is now available. For just $50, fans can purchase five lower tier flex tickets to any men’s or women’s non-conference Portland game. Visit PortlandPilots.com/SummerSale to reserve your tickets today.

The pilots will host the NCAA runners-up in the North Carolina Tar Heels on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, at the Moda Center to open the PKI. The two teams faced each other back in 2017 at the inaugural tournament, the PK80 Invitational. The PKI is one of two tournaments, the other being the Phil Knight Legacy, held in Portland over Thanksgiving weekend, with a total of eight men’s teams and four women’s teams competing during ESPN’s annual festival week, November 24-27. The Chiles Center acts as a host site along with the Rosenviertel’s Moda Center and the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Portland, North Carolina, Villanova, and Iowa State form one side of the PKI bracket, while Michigan State, Oregon, Alabama, and UConn complete the bracket.

Oregon and the Pilots will also meet later in the regular season, with the Pilots traveling to Eugene, Oregon to fight the Ducks on December 17th. The Ducks earned a postseason invite to the NIT last year after winning 20-15 overall and advancing to the Round of 32 before falling to Texas A&M. The Ducks have made seven NCAA tournament appearances in 12 years under head coach Dana Altman, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2017.

Pilots fans have their first chance to see Portland in action on November 7th. The Pilots will host the Lewis & Clark Pioneers as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team, with the men playing at 7:30 p.m. later this week. The Pilots will compete in another doubleheader on November 9 with the women and Florida A&M welcome to another tip at 7:30 p.m.

The Pilots end the week on November 11 when they welcome their crosstown rivals, the Portland State Vikings, to the Chiles Center. Last year, the Pilots beat the Vikings 69-54 at the Viking Pavilion for the third straight game. The women’s team’s win over the Vikings last season marked the first time since 2015 that both teams defeated Portland State in the same year.

After the three home games, Portland will play Kent State on November 14th and the Air Force on November 17th. The Pilots return home to face another Pacific Northwest rival with the Seattle U Redhawks on November 19. The Redhawks finished an impressive 23-9 on aggregate and 14-4 in WAC play, winning their first-ever WAC regular-season title and secured first place in the WAC tournament.

After the Seattle U showdown, Portland will compete in the PKI Nov. 24-27 before beginning with a four-game homestand. During this stretch, they play the Multnomah Lions on November 30, the North Dakota Fighting Hawks on December 3, the North Dakota State Bison on November 5, and the New Orleans Privateers on December 10. The Pilots beat the Privateers in the first round of The Basketball Classic at Chiles Center last March, marking the Pilots’ first postseason win.

The Pilots wrap up non-conference play with their Dec. 17 matchup against the Ducks and a road game in California against UC Riverside. WCC play begins the following week. While the official WCC schedule is yet to be finalized, all conference roster matchups have been finalized.

The Pilots have had one of the most successful seasons in recent memory in their first year under head coach Shantay Legans. The pilots finished the WCC 19-15 and finished sixth. They recorded their highest overall win tally since 2010 and their fourth-highest overall win tally since joining Division I in 1958. Their 7–7 record in WCC play was also their best since 2015. The Pilots return for the season with their top seven goalscorers and all key contributors back into the roster.
