Schedule and tips for today’s summer festival: Thursday, April 23

After a (hopefully) one-off postponement to September, the summer festival is back where it belongs, starting right after the summer solstice. And as the festival maintains its three-week format, there are plenty of opportunities to see local, national and global artists perform over the nine days.

Each day we bring you a rundown of Radio Milwaukee’s headliners, hidden gems and staff picks so you can catch the best of the ‘Fest’. Here’s what’s in store for the day, from Country am Amp to Big Boi in the Backyard (check out the full schedule for Summerfest 2022 here).

Today at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater: Jason Aldean, Gabby Barrett and John Morgan, 7:30 p.m

One of country music’s most recognizable names leads a bill that includes two relative newcomers, while Jason Aldean continues to release an ambitious double album with a headlining slot in the amp. Gabby Barrett joins him after being the 2021 ACM New Female Artist of the Year and 2022 awards ceremony co-host. John Morgan signed to Aldean’s Night Train Records earlier this year and has the very summer party-ready single Coldest Beer in Town in the works following the release of a debut album last year.

Dan Reiner’s Staff Pick: Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit @ BMO Harris Pavilion, 10 p.m

Jason Isbell is the rare musician to bridge the gap between southern country and indie rock. In fact, his last three albums have reached #1 on several Billboard charts: Something More Than Free (rock, folk and country); “The Nashville Sound” (indie, rock, folk and country); and “Reunions” (rock, folk and country). Accompanied by his five-piece band The 400 Unit, the group recently wrapped shows with Sheryl Crow and Waxahatchee, and they will tour with Willie Nelson, The Avett Brothers and others later this year.

Dan Reiner’s staff pick: Big Boi @ Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard, 10 p.m

Big Boi last visited Milwaukee with his Outkast partner André 3000 at Summerfest in 2014. Now the Atlanta rapper returns to the festival grounds with his extensive solo catalogue. These include 2021’s “Big Sleepover,” a project with longtime collaborator Sleepy Brown that includes album appearances from Killer Mike and CeeLo Green, among others. Chances are you’ll also hear some certified classics like The Way You Move.

Local Flavor: Brett Nevsky & The No Tomorrow @ UScellular Connection Stage, 8:15 p.m

Milwaukee native and hyphenated Brett Newski has had a lot going on over the last few years, most notably the release of his book It’s Hard to Be a Person and its aptly named companion album It’s Hard to Be a Person: A Soundtrack. to the book.” The musician, podcaster, author and illustrator credits a Barenaked Ladies show in Milwaukee with putting him on the path to his first guitar, and tonight his band will perform for the Canadian legends on the UScellular Connection Stage open.
