Seafair Weekend Festival: 2022 schedule, impact on traffic

SEATTLE — The Seafair Weekend Festival kicked off on Friday and will draw tens of thousands through Sunday to see the region’s biggest air shows and boating events and welcome revelers for the first time since 2019. The Blue Angels will take to the skies every afternoon through Sunday, along with a slate of other aerial performers, including demonstrations by the Air Force’s F-35A Lightning II team and the Army’s Golden Knights parachutist team.

The legendary Lake Washington seaplane races also return to Seafair this year, with the first events kicking off Friday morning at Seattle’s Genesee Park and concluding with an awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon. Those unable to attend in person can watch live coverage of the races and air shows on KONG-TV.

Revelers can also watch the takeoff and landing of the Blue Angels at Boeing Field from the Museum of Flight parking lot, where the museum also hosts the “Jet Blast Bash” on Saturday and Sunday.

Thanks to flight route changes introduced in 2019, this year’s air show will not have to close Interstate 90 during performances. However, drivers should expect congestion due to several popular events and construction works. The Seattle Seahawks will play a “mock game” at training camp Saturday afternoon at Lumen Field and the Seattle Mariners will host the Los Angeles Angels Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

Another weekend of Revive I-5 work also means weekend-long lane reductions on the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 in the SoDo area.
