The best outdoor cinemas in the UK

Now that summer is coming, it’s time to head to an outdoor cinema. These days, outdoor cinemas are a mainstay of our summer social calendar and a fun way to catch cult classics, audience favorites and new Hollywood blockbusters under the stars in warm weather (- ish, you probably still need a blanket for that). when the sun goes down – that’s still just Britain!).

To help you find your nearest outdoor cinema, we’ve compiled a list of the best outdoor cinemas across the UK – and some of them take place in truly iconic locations. Movie in a medieval castle, anyone?

Rooftop Film Club, Peckham and Stratford, London

There are two Rooftop Film Club locations, one on the infamous Bussey Building in Peckham and the other on Roof East in Shoreditch. In general, you’ll find the same audience-friendly classics in screening in outdoor cinemas these days – Fat, Dirty dancing etc. – but at the Rooftop Film Club you will find a film schedule that covers the entire spectrum, from cult indie films – fight club, The Birdcage and Dazed and confused – to old favorites – mean girls, clueless and notting hill – and new releases incl Top Gun: Maverick and Everything everywhere at once.

The Grove, Hertfordshire

This summer, The Grove Hotel has teamed up with film legend Everyman to bring guests and guests a pop-up alfresco cinema experience. Guests of The Grove can enjoy free screenings of new releases and old classics in the Walled Garden, Wednesday through Sunday, every week from July 15 through September 4. Or opt for one of the Dinner & Cinema packages, where you can enjoy a set menu at one of three on-site restaurants before settling for a movie.

The Luna cinema, different locations

The Luna Cinema now hosts screens in more than 40 locations across the UK in some of the most unique and impressive venues. Screenings tend to be a mix of Hollywood blockbusters and feel-good classics to suit all tastes Pretty Woman and The Breakfast Club to Star Wars: A New Hope and no time to die.

Adventure cinema, different locations

Adventure Cinema is running over 200 outdoor cinema screenings across the UK this summer, so you’re sure to find one near you. And there are some truly iconic locations, from medieval castles to country estates. VIP lounge chairs can be booked at any location but the idea is to set up with your own picnic, camp chairs and blanket for the authentic experience. Movies are very much crowd pullers, including Westside Story, Mamma Mia! and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Cinestock, various locations

Cinestock is like the outdoor cinema version of Woodstock – for 14 nights they take on six stunning venues in Surrey and Sussex, including Brighton’s legendary Saltdean Lido, Gatton Park and Newhaven Fort, showing film after film. Unlike many other outdoor cinemas, food and beverages are available including craft beer, cocktails, pizza, popcorn and more. There is even a live music performance before each film. Movies to choose from included The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Fat, The greatest showman and Back to the Future.

Moonbeamers pop up cinema, Essex

Moonbeamers run outdoor and drive-in cinema experiences at various locations throughout Essex throughout the summer. This summer are among the top billing screenings Liquorice Pizza, rocket Man and The Batman.
