Using their opponents’ combined records for 2022 (135-154-0), the Lions have the 28th most difficult schedule in 2022. Outside of the NFC East, Detroit have the easiest group of opponents and this news will come as a relief for Lions- fans after the team started 0-8 last season.

Detroit’s current Winning Total (Over/Under) for 2022 is 6.5 on FanDuel Sportsbook and the Over is priced at -125 while the Under is priced at +105. A $100 bet on the under wins by $105 if the Lions win six or fewer games in 2022, while a $125 bet returns $100 in winnings if Detroit records seven or more wins.

Our experts have broken down the Lions’ entire 2022 schedule and predict they can win over 6.5 games. Let’s dive into the Detroit-drafted rookies and explain why our experts make the best bet.

Detroit Lions depth chart: Can Jameson Williams and Aidan Hutchinson make an immediate impact?

The Detroit Lions had an amazing draft in 2022, picking DE Aidan Hutchinson with the #2 pick overall before trading to draft WR Jameson Williams with the #12 pick. Both rookies expect to start if they’re healthy, but Williams is still coming back from a cruciate ligament tear he sustained in Alabama. Hutchinson currently has the lowest odds of winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2022, while Williams is at +2000 odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year with Desmond Ridder and George Pickens.

It’s safe to say both rookies will improve this Detroit roster, and once Williams returns from injury, the Lions’ receiving corps could be a top-10 unit in the league.

Detroit Lions Win Overall Over/Under Prediction: Over 6.5 wins (-125 on FanDuel Sportsbook)

The Detroit Lions began training camp on Saturday, July 30 and there is high hope they can improve on their 2021 3-13-1 record. The good news for Detroit is that they played the fourth-toughest schedule in 2021 and experienced the third-highest adjusted lost games in the NFL. Detroit’s schedule is much easier this season and they won’t face a single opponent who has a rest advantage. A major key for Detroit will be winning closer games, and we believe they’ve made some key additions on offense and defense that will help them in that aspect.

The Lions started 0-8 last year, largely due to their offense adding -0.24 extra points on average in the first three quarters (most recently in the NFL) (EPA). They led in Week 2 against the Packers, Week 3 against the Ravens, Week 5 against the Vikings, and Week 7 against the Rams, but lost each of those matchups. The play-calling was borderline cruel, and Dan Campbell took over offense after Detroit started the season 0-8. He led them to a 3-5-1 down the line and we expect a similar performance in 2022.

The signing of WR DJ Chark will give QB Jared Goff another talented weapon, and once WR Jameson Williams returns from his ACL injury, Detroit will have multiple options for Goff to aim for. On defense, the Lions allowed 379.8 yards (29th in the NFL) and 27.5 points per game (31st in the NFL) last season, and a healthy secondary and improved line of defense will likely lead to that improve those numbers. We expect DE Aidan Hutchinson to immediately improve a defensive line with the second-lowest pass rush win rate in the NFL, and Detroit is almost guaranteed to improve in the high school. They’re hoping to land CB Jeff Okudah for the first round of 2020 for a full season after playing just one game in 2021, and newly signed safetyman DeShon Elliott should be an improvement.

The Lions lost several close games in 2021, but their red-zone efficiency should improve with Anthony Lynn removed from the offensive coordinator position. Detroit TD on just 47% of their red-zone drives in 2021, while their defense allowed touchdowns on 70% of red-zone drives (both most recent in the NFL). It’s highly unlikely they’ll repeat that feat with all the extra figures on offense, and if the Lions can win a couple of close games in 2022, seven wins are possible.

Detroit will likely have the closing point spread line close to plus or minus 3 in about 10 of its 17 games. Away games with the Vikings, Patriots, Cowboys and Packers seem difficult, while their home games against the Eagles, Packers and Bills are also likely to end in losses. However, Detroit’s four away games against the Bears, Giants, Jets and Panthers will determine if they can pull off seven wins, but we’re confident a year of experience for Campbell will improve their play calling, and we predict the Lions will over 6.5 will win wins 2022.
