It’s official: The upcoming ninth season of The Lightning on the CW will be his last. It will debut in 2023 and consist of 13 episodes, making this the shortest season of its run.
As Deadline reports, there is speculation that season 9 could be The LightningIts final chapter began in January when star Grant Gustin agreed to a one-year deal and limited his season 9 involvement to 15 episodes. The CW announced in May that next season will be aired midseason for the first time The Lightning was not on the network’s fall schedule, except for the CW’s pandemic fall 2020 lineup, which consists mostly of acquisitions.

The Lightning, by Berlanti Prods. and Warner Bros. TV, was a key series for the CW. It was a spin off of Arrow, and helped establish the Arrowverse as a franchise. The Lightning was the most successful of the Arrowverse series and also the longest running, edging Arrow‘s eight-season run. With Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman and Naomi all finish their runs this season, The Lightning‘s departure would be taken Superman & Lois and possibly Gotham Knight, if things go well, as the sole returning DC series for the 2023-24 season.
After being ranked as the CW’s top series for the first half of its run, The Lightning continues to be one of the network’s strongest performers, with Season 8 ending as one of the network’s most watched shows of the 2021-22 season with 1.03 million viewers and among the most streamed shows on its digital platforms.

Gustin has previously spoken about his journey The Lightning as Barry Allen/The Flash, including these comments at the end of Season 7.
“Listen, I may never have a job that’s cool enough that so many people actually tune in to watch again, so I’m not going to take it for granted,” he said entertainment tonight. “Seven [seasons] it actually is for most of the cast, but I think it would be great if we could continue after that.
