CINCINNATI — High school football is back.
The 25th annual Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown announced its game schedule Wednesday night.
“It’s incredible that we’re celebrating what I believe is the best high school football in a quarter century,” said event organizer Tom Gamble.
“It’s a tribute to the quality of the high school football teams, players and coaches in this region. There may be areas that produce greater amounts of blue chippers, but the competition and traditions that take place here each week are second to none and is a reflection of great communities full of fans who love to support their schools and teams.”
The annual event begins Thursday, August 18, when Fairfield (6-5 in 2021) hosts Huber Heights Wayne (8-3 in 2021) and Roger Bacon (9-3) hosts Taft (9-3 ) is a key matchup of Division IV, Region 16.
Both games are scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. when high school football season officially begins.
On August 19, East Central (10-3) hosts rival Lawrenceburg (11-2) in an intriguing matchup in Indiana to mark the first showdown week of the season.
The Friday night event schedule in Ohio begins Aug. 26 with two Greater Miami Conference games including Colerain (5-6) at Princeton (11-2) and Lakota West (11-2) at Lakota East (7-4 ). .
Lakota West has been a Division I runner-up for the past two seasons. The Firebirds are led by several standout players, including senior safety Malik Hartford, a verbal oblige from Ohio State University who is ranked the state’s second-greatest player in his class by 247 Sports .
Gamble said he’s proud of the balanced schedule between the programs in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, which continues to showcase talent on school teams large and small this season.
“The fact that we’re here a quarter of a century after the first showdown in 1998 and we’re still going strong feels great,” Gamble said.
On Sept. 2, Milford (7-5) hosts Loveland (2-8) in an Eastern Cincinnati Conference game.
The showdown highlights two teams from northern Kentucky on September 9 when reigning two-time Class 2A state champion Beechwood (15-0), who has started the season on a 23-game winning streak, plays host to Simon Kenton (2 -9) is ).
On September 16, St. Xavier (10-3) plays host to Moeller (11-4) in an intriguing Greater Catholic League South Division matchup. Moeller was a Division I semifinalist in 2021.
McNicholas (11-2) hosts Alter (6-6) on September 23, followed by reigning Division IV state champion Clinton-Massie (14-1) in Western Brown (11-3) and Winton Woods ( 13). -3), the 2021 Division II state champion, a week later at Kings (11-1).
Cooper (7-4) hosts Conner (7-5) to open the October portion of the event schedule.
Anderson (9-3) hosts district rivals Turpin (6-5) on October 14, while Elder (6-6) hosts La Salle (7-5) on October 21.
The showdown concludes its 25th year as Ryle (9-4) hosts Covington Catholic (9-4) on Oct. 28.
