Vol’s QB Hendon Hooker keeps getting insulted

Over two months ago, we published this article about how ridiculous and disrespectful it was to put Arkansas Razorbacks quarterback KJ Jefferson ahead of Tennessee football quarterback Hendon Hooker. Last month we slammed ESPN for listing UT’s quarterback room, and later we slammed CBS for ignoring the Vols’ room altogether.

Well, the disrespect reached new heights last week. 247Sports’ Brad Crawford was the one who had Jefferson over hooker, but he reminded us of that fact first in his SEC quarterback rankings. He had Hooker at number 3 and Jefferson at number 2.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren ranked Hooker 29th in his ranking of high-impact transfers over the past five years. Most egregious, however, was PFF’s ranking of the top 10 quarterbacks. The Tennessee Football caller wasn’t there.

All of this came out within a week and is a major insult to Hooker. You can read our post comparing him to Jefferson linked in the first paragraph for why he should never be behind Jefferson. Nothing justifies that.

However, VanHaaren’s rankings are just as bad. Hooker joined the Vols from the Virginia Tech Hokies and perhaps saved the program’s first year of Josh Heupel. This offseason alone, he’s brought Caleb Williams to the USC Trojans and Jaxson Dart to the Ole Miss Rebels ahead of Hooker.

Darts is only half a season into play and Hooker has better numbers than either across the board. We’re not just talking about bare figures either. He has a better completion percentage, more yards per attempt, and a better touchdown-to-interception ratio than both.

Simply put, neither should be considered a more impactful transfer than Hooker based on what they could do this year. Those numbers are why the PFF ranking doesn’t make sense either. Shouldn’t PFF primarily pursue efficiency and ignore the system and the supporting cast?

If they did, there was no way Hooker would get out of the top 10. Ridiculously, Williams is actually No. 2 on this list, and Spencer Rattler, who lost his job last year, is No. 3. Bryce Young and CJ Stroud are the only quarterbacks with a clear case over hooker.

Taking all of this into account, Tennessee football once again has a superstar in the backfield who doesn’t get love. Hooker joins Johnny Majors and Peyton Manning, both of whom have been snubbed in their Heisman campaigns. He gets the disrespect in preseason but now it’s embarrassing.
