WBB Announces Schedule Outside of Conference – University of North Carolina Athletics

CHAPEL HILL, NC — The North Carolina women’s basketball team will face a challenging non-conference list to open the 2022-23 season, facing at least four teams that competed in the NCAA tournament in the previous season, including at least two who joined the Tar Heels at Sweet 16 2022.

UNC, who finished last season 25-7 and made the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015, will kick off the season on November 9 with a home game against Jackson State, the defending SWAC champion and an NCAA tournament team in 2022, open. Carolina will play five non-conference games at his home court at Carmichael Arena, three at opponents’ gyms, and three at neutral venues.

“Our off-conference schedule was created to challenge us against teams from across the country, against a variety of playstyles and in unique environments ahead of the ACC’s gauntlet,” said UNC coach Courtney Banghart, entering her fourth season at the helm of the program. “We will be up against five opponents from the Power 5 conferences, only one of whom – TCU on November 12 – will be at home. We’re also excited to compete in two prestigious national tournaments: the Phil Knight Invitational in Portland over Thanksgiving and the inaugural Jumpman Invitational in Charlotte in December.

“We will also be hosting our first school day game this season as we bring local schools to Carmichael. The team is very excited to return to the energy of our fans at Carmichael.”

The Tar Heels will enjoy their first three games on home court and, following the Jackson State game, will host TCU on Nov. 12 and South Carolina State on Nov. 16 for a lunchtime game geared toward students from local elementary schools. After that, UNC is away from Chapel Hill four straight times, beginning with a trip to play James Madison in Harrisonburg, Virginia on November 20 before heading west into Thanksgiving week. On November 24, UNC opens play in the Phil Knight Invitational against last season’s NCAA tournament team Oregon in Portland, Oregon.

On November 27, Carolina will play either Iowa State, another 2022 Sweet 16 team, or Michigan State in game two of the PKI.

After the Oregon trip, the Tar Heels set off again to face Indiana in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge game on December 1 in Bloomington, Indiana. The Hoosiers are another UNC opponent who made the Sweet 16 last season.

Back in Carmichael, UNC hosts UNCW on December 7th and Wofford on December 11th. The Tar Heels travel to Greensboro on December 16 to play North Carolina A&T.

UNC tops the non-conference list on December 20 in Charlotte, NC, taking on Michigan, an elite eight-team, in last season’s Jumpman Invitational.

The Atlantic Coast Conference schedule for 2022-23 has not yet been announced.

Carolina brings back four starters and eight of the top nine scorers from last year’s roster.
