WESTBOROUGH – Three bids for the former Westborough-owned Regal Cinemas have been submitted and opened.

Confidential administrative assistant Cela Dorr said the bids were opened last Monday.

“Now a phase of verification of the [request for proposals],” She said.

The former cinema, located at 231 Turnpike Road, was built in 1997. It was abruptly closed more than four years ago.

After a search for the owner of the property, the city acquired the property through foreclosure earlier this year. In March of that year, the municipal assembly voted to make the property available to the special committee.

The Select Board approved the RFP for the sale of the property this spring.

The approximately 49,000 square foot building is located on 29.34 acres on Route 9. It consists of 12 individual theaters.

In public meetings and in the tender itself, city officials noted damage and vandalism to the former theater, including the destruction of bathroom fixtures, walls, false ceilings and glass, and water damage from burst pipes.

The city has indicated in the tender that applicants should be aware that they may not be able to use the building without extensive renovations.

Police Chief Jeffrey Lourie described some of the damage done to the theater as well as ongoing problems on the theater grounds outside of the building itself during the town meeting.

“From a public safety perspective, the sooner we get rid of this property, the better,” Lourie said at the time.

In June, the city held a tour of the theater before proposals were due last week.

During a June 28 meeting, Assistant City Administrator Kim Foster told the Select Board that 37 companies had requested copies of the RFP for the property. However, she noted that the city knew it would not get all of those requests back in the form of actual submissions.

Dorr informed the Community Advocate that the Select Board will be the selection committee.

As of July 28, the schedule for awarding the RFP was still under discussion.

The Select Board was expected to discuss the former theater during an executive meeting on Tuesday.
