CONWAY, Ark. – A new season begins for the Central Arkansas women’s basketball team as the Sugar Bears attend the ASUN conference and announce the 2022-23 schedule. With an out-of-conference schedule that features some heavyweights followed by a sophomore year in ASUN, Central Arkansas is gearing up for a competitive head coach slate Sandra Rushingis 11th Season.
“This year marks the first time since Covid that we’ve been able to play a full non-conference schedule and we’re looking forward to playing against some good regional programmes. I feel like our non-conference schedule will help us prepare for the competition we will face in ASUN,” Rushing said of the schedule. “ASUN is a very competitive conference with great players and great coaches . You have to bring your A game to the ASUN every night and that’s what we’re going to strive for.”
Wasting no time introducing their young roster to the rigors of the Division I basketball team, the Sugar Bears end the season on November 7 with a game away to Kansas State. Central Arkansas is starting the season against a Power 5 school for the fourth straight year, taking on a Wildcats team that advanced 20-13 to the second round of the NCAA tournament. After Kansas State, the Sugar Bears travel to Fayetteville on November 11 for another fight with the Razorbacksth. After a brutal SEC schedule last season, Arkansas made the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.
After the two road games to open the year, Lindenwood will host its home opener on November 15 in Central Arkansasth. As a first-time opponent, Lindenwood will provide an excellent opportunity to show Bear Nation the new signing class at the Farris Center. After facing Louisiana Monroe on the street, Purple and Gray are back home on November 26th to face the Hendrix Warriorsth before facing Alcorn State again.
December begins with the annual Governor’s I-40 Showdown against Little Rock on December 3rdapprox. An away game in Tulsa continues to provide challenges for the Sugar Bear roster to prepare for ASUN’s January schedule as the team wraps up 2022 and the non-conference list with home games against Champion Christian and Alabama A&M.
The conference portion of the schedule begins in full swing to kick off the new year, with the Sugar Bears hosting last year’s No. 1 ASUN West from Jacksonville State on January 2ndnd. A few days later, on May 5th, the Purple and Gray head out to battle the Liberty Flames for the team’s first ASUN street game. Liberty finished last season with a 28-5 record and advanced to the second round of the WNIT.
From there, the Sugar Bears will play 15 more conference games, eight home and seven away. With some new faces attending the conference this season, the Sugar Bears will play home games against ASUN newcomers Austin Peay (January 19) and Queens (February 11). Central Arkansas will wrap up the regular season on February 23 with two home games against North Florida and Jacksonvilleapprox and 25thwith a final away game on March 1stSt at Austin Peay. The ASUN tournament begins on March 4ththruns until the 11thth of month.
