COLORADO SPRINGS – World Lacrosse today announced the schedule for the 2022 Men’s Under-21 Championship, hosted by Ireland Lacrosse at the University of Limerick from August 10th to 20th. Hosted by World Lacrosse, the largest-ever Junior World Championship will feature a record 23 teams and more than 500 athletes competing in 86 games over 11 days.
The 23 teams in Limerick will be divided into five pools – three groups of five and two groups of four. Pool A includes the top ranked teams: USA, Canada, Australia, Haudenosaunee and England.
Originally scheduled for 2020, the tournament kicks off with a blockbuster opening day on Wednesday, August 10, when the USA take on Canada in the first game at 12pm. After another game in Pool A between the Haudenosaunee and England at 1pm, hosts Ireland meet Germany at 7pm
Michael Kennedy, CEO of Ireland Lacrosse said: “I am delighted to welcome 23 teams to Ireland for a record-breaking World Championship. This tournament will demonstrate the extraordinary growth of lacrosse with a talented field of under-21 teams and I can’t wait for global audiences to experience all that Limerick and Ireland have to offer.”
Pool play will continue through Monday, August 15 and determine the seeding for the playoff bracket. The top three teams from Pools B and C and the top 4th place finisher from those pools will join the five teams from Pool A in a 12-team championship round.
Meanwhile, Pools D and E aim to provide development and championship experience for 10 teams that do not meet the age requirements for full participation. After the pool game, these teams compete in the platinum group to determine places 13 through 23, along with the three lowest ranked teams from pools B and C.
Bracket play begins on Tuesday, August 16th and builds up to the semifinals on Thursday, August 18th and the medal games on Saturday, August 20th, with the championship game scheduled for 7pm
During the event, 22 games will be streamed worldwide across ESPN’s digital platforms, with the semifinals and league game also being broadcast in the US on ESPNU. The Men’s Under-21 Championship is the second event in a historic multi-year partnership between World Lacrosse and ESPN, announced last month.
The last men’s junior championship of 2016 ended in a classic gold medal match as the USA recovered from a 6-0 deficit and defeated Canada 13-12 in British Columbia. The win continued America’s unblemished championship gold medal streak dating back to 1988.
The full schedule for the event is below. All times are given in local time, Irish Standard Time / UTC+1:00.
